Season of Hope, MedShare's unique year-end giving campaign, allows
donors to purchase medical items in the name of an honoree. These items
will be sent overseas to a needy institution. Following the purchase,
MedShare will send a gift card to the honoree to commemorate the gift.
These gifts are perfect during the holidays, as they truly embody the
meaning of the season.

2007 Gift Offerings

Syringes: $20 Gift
Research by the World Health Organization and UNICEF
indicates that each year, approximately 27 million children do
not receive basic vaccinations against preventable diseases
such as measles, diphtheria and tetanus. An estimated 2.1 million of these children will die as a direct result. These simple vaccinations, while often the difference between life and death for millions of children, cannot be administered due to the absence of
clean, sterile syringes. A small donation of $20 allows MedShare to
send an entire box of surplus syringes to qualifying healthcare institutions.
|
Sterile Gloves and Gowns: $35 Gift
Inadequate access to sterile surgical wear by healthcare
personnel in economically developing countries often results in the washing and reusing of items such as gowns
and latex gloves. Using the same surgical gown or pair of latex
gloves for multiple surgeries jeopardizes the safety of both physician and patient, increasing the risk of spreading infection.
With your gift of $35, MedShare can send unused, recovered
gloves and gowns to institutions lacking the most basic medical
supplies.
|
|
$20 sends approximately 200 sterile syringes for use in
vaccinations and surgeries
|
|
|
Your gift of $35 will send ten pounds of surgical wear,
keeping doctors, nurses and patients safe

Cancer Biopsy Kit: $50 Gift
According to the International Network for Cancer Treatment
and Research, approximately 60% of cancer cases occur in the
developing world. Cancer is steadily becoming a more common
cause of premature death than infectious disease in many economically developing nations. Early detection is the most effective way to
treat all forms of cancer, but without the proper equipment, healthcare institutions are unable to provide this service. With your $50
donation, MedShare can send one fully equipped cancer biopsy kit to
a qualified healthcare institution, greatly improving a patient’s chance
for survival.

Labor and Delivery Kit: $100 Gift
Studies by medical journal The Lancet show that women in the
developing world are 175 times more likely to die during childbirth than women in wealthier nations. In addition, each year
millions of women suffer from disabilities due to preventable pregnancy complications. Newborns in the developing world are three to
twenty times more likely to develop neonatal infections because of
poor hospital conditions and lack of supplies. The safety of the
mother and child depend on clean, effective delivery. With your donation of $100, MedShare will send a delivery kit consisting of sterile
drapes, gloves, umbilical clamps and shears, and bulb syringes, which
will help to ensure a safe delivery.

Basic Surgery Kit: $500 Gift
According to the Journal of the Society of Medicine and Natural Sciences of Parma, an
estimated one-third to one-half of the world’s population
lacks basic surgical care. This is largely due to the
fact that stainless steel instruments are prohibitively
expensive. As a result, patients suffer from otherwise
preventable infections because basic surgeries, such as
appendectomies and hernia repair, cannot be performed. With your gift of $500,
MedShare will send a full surgery kit, including basic items
such as scalpels, clamps and forceps, as well as items for use
in specific operations.

Hospital Bed: $1,000 Gift
Hospital beds are so frequently requested that the
demand from recipients far exceeds MedShare's
supply. As a result, patients receiving care in the economically
developing world are often forced to rest
and recuperate on a cement floor or in a bed with another
other patient. Such practices not only drastically reduce
patient comfort, but also contribute to the spread of
infectious diseases. Hospital beds are extremely
expensive for healthcare institutions to purchase, yet they are
vital for proper patient care. Your donation of $1,000
will allow for safe and comfortable hospital stays
patients in these institutions. MedShare offers both
electric and manual beds, depending on availability.
